“Can we go home now?” Willow asks.

I nod and my shaky smile falters as I turn back to Addison. “I’ll see you two soon.”

I trail after Willow as she runs to the truck. I’m impatient as she sets up her iPod, but I do my best not to show it. On the way home, my stomach flips in somersaults, and I have to press the cruise control to keep myself from speeding. When we finally get home, I walk through the door with my head hung in shame. Emily is in the living room, wrapped up in a blanket and looking like an angel. A beat-up and tired angel.

Willow is already on her way up the stairs, promising a fashion show of her new clothes. My boots feel like they’re full of cement as I make my way over to the couch and sit next to Emily. After eighteen years by each other’s side, she knows when something’s bothering me.

Her worried eyes look me up and down. “What’s wrong, Chase?”

My head drops even lower, and my hand flies up to my neck, rubbing on the knotted muscles but doing nothing to ease the tension. Finally, I turn to look at her, pulling in and releasing a deep breath.

“We need to talk.”
