It’s been a long time since spontaneity factored into sex, and I missed the rush. Missed the liberty of releasing the side of me that liked wild and damaged, rather than secure and arranged. She needs me, not just because her muscles are contracting my name to memory, but because this place isn’t safe for a nobody. Pink Street is nothing more than a sea of rose petals, that when dried up, fade into existence.

But first, I need to know. “Neve, what did you do with my drugs?”

“I-I... t-took them.”

And the stuttering is back.

“Yes, I know.” Wrapping my hand around the front of her neck, I lean her back against me and squeeze just a little bit. “Don’t mistake what happened earlier as a weakness. You caught me off guard with my mother, with your kindness.” My arm curls around her waist. “But I’m not kind. I’m not gentle.”

She clears her throat, the motion vibrates my palms and the pads of my fingers.

Squeeze a little tighter. She mumbles letters, the alphabet. In reverse.

“The three packages that were strapped to me, where are they?”

“How do you know I found them?"

Curving my arm around her waist, I lift up and drop her ass onto the chaise. Pain radiates from my abdomen from the weight and the wound. I’m nowhere near fighting conditions. I don’t even know if I can run without the wound stopping me.

“Are you okay?” Without even asking, she lifts my shirt up, her fingers trailing over my skin, summoning the goosebumps. She lightly pats on the gauze. “You’re not bleeding.”

“Which is not something I can say for you if you don’t come clean. The three—”

She drops her hands to her side, palms plopped on the cushion. “One of them got destroyed.”

“What?”

She points toward the bullet entry site. “It pierced it, when I found you the powder was leaking inside and I had to wash it away.”

“You washed it?”

“More like I dissolved it... to save your life.”

“Dissolved,” I echo back in shock. “A mill worth of drugs.”

She snorts. “Are you kidding?”

“NO!” I shout so loud she grips the cushions tight and tucks her fingers between them. I hunch down, coming face to face with her.

“I had to do it to save you.”

Our noses touch as she stares into my eyes, holding my gaze steady. Her lips are red like fire, from biting and smashing them together. Her gaze drops to my mouth, then back up to my eyes.

She’s going to kiss me.Abnormal as fuck.

The thought hadn’t even settled with my nerves before she whispers, more like mumbles something I can’t understand.

“If you stutter, I’m going carve my initials into your tongue until you bleed my name.”

She takes a beat before she clearly says, “This isn’t you.”

“You have no idea who I am.” No matter what my mom told her, I’m not that kid with the good heart anymore. At least, I try not to be. It does nothing but get me in trouble. All of this though — my mom, this block, this house, my past, this stranger — has me twisted.

“Your mom talked about you so much, and I drea— I feel like I grew up with you.”

“Thank God you didn’t.”

The scowl on her face makes her protest even more adorable. It had been a while since I met a girl who mastered looking hot and cute when angry. “What kind of shit did your family put you through?”
