“When I finally got the okay to show up at my father’s private location, he tortured me until the paternity test came back positive. Three days.”

“That’s insane.”

“He’s insane,” Styx corrects me. “He did that to me, and I’m his blood. What do you think he’s going to do to you?”

“He’s going to kill me,” I state quite matter of fact. Or since Daddy is Mr. Twisted, he’d probably ask Styx to off me.

Styx shakes his head. “No, Snow. I won’t let him do that. We’ll find a way to keep him from coming at you. To hide you or find you an angel.”

“An angel?”

“Like a godfather, who offers you protection.”

“Like your mom?”

He snorts. “No, someone with power. My mom might be the love of my father’s life, but he’s done some shitty things to her too.”

Not surprising for a Drug Lord, or whatever title Hell has given him. “From my experience, shitty people tend to do real shitty things.”

Even though I had not meant him specifically, Styx takes my comment with a grain of salt. “Dad’s livelihood functions without Mom, just not his heart. It’s probably why he has none.”

“Wow.”

“It’s not surprising, Snow. He’s a rotten asshole, and I’d kill him myself if I didn’t need help.”

Or maybe not kill him? There has to better ways than going around shooting people and ending lives.

“We need someone who owes me a favor, and who my father find essential.”

I’m not sure why I even ask, but I do, “Do you have a lot of people who fit that category? Favor debtors?”

“Yes, actually. But I trust only one of them: Margot Ballinger. She’s a medical examiner and a professor at Stonewall University, in the States.”

“Oh.” I’m not quite sure what to say to that. I had never even heard of that place, or Ballinger for that matter. “How is she going to help me?”

“By setting you up at the university. Maybe even get you into a post-doctorate program. You can have a normal life, away from the dangers this place brings.”

“But not your father.”

Wait. Did he say post-doc?“I don’t know if I fit the requirements for that.” Plus, the idea of going back to school scares the shit of me, but I stifle it down and wait to cross that bridge, if and when it comes.

“You will.”

Fabricated transcripts? “I don’t know…”

“Don’t know what? Whether you want to die or live?” He chortles rudely. “Because from where I stand, those are the only two options.”

He’s lying down, but whatever. Given the chance to live, I chose to survive. Get away from Pink Street and my awful life here. A shrug is enough of an answer to keep him happy.

“Stonewall is neutral territory for my father. He’s not allowed in there or anywhere around it.”

“Why?”

“You don’t need to know that. Also, best you don’t know.”

“Okay…”

“But while you’re there, I can guarantee you’re safe from my father. It’s the only place that guarantee exists.”
