“Why?”

She inhales sharply and bites on the side of her lip. “You remember that guy on the crawlway? The one who was freaking out?”

The one she stopped for and nearly drew all the attention to us. “Vaguely, yeah. I wasn’t really paying attention to him.” A little lie to make her feel comfortable.

“He was my professor. He—wasn’t a great person.”

We lock eyes. There’s more to that story, but that’s all she’s going to give me. Tidbits. My father mentioned someone was looking of her, but I assumed it was the Portuguese mob.

“What was he doing on Pink Street? Was he there for you?”

“I don’t think so. Probably, ruining some other girl’s life.” She points toward the science flyer. “It brings up a lot of issues I shoved down. I’ll be fine.”

I never even asked her if she wanted to continue in the same area. I just assumed. “Science is good, right?” I ask. “You like it?”

Slanted brows greet me. “I wouldn’t know what else to do. It’s not like I can pick up with post-graduate work in a field I know nothing about.” She shrugs her shoulder. I’m only good at two things: trouble and books.”

“You’re good at much more than that, Snow.”

“Maybe I can be here.” Those muted pink pumps shuffle back and forth as she balances her weight. “I’m just nervous. It’s been a while since I’ve been on campus and made friends. I don’t know how to anymore. I’m older than most of them.”

I shake my head. “This campus has a lot of post graduate students working in the labs. They even teach classes.”

“Teach?”

“Would you like that?”

An abrupt shake of the head. “Too much peopling. I think I’ll have a hard enough time fitting in as it is because of my age.”

That I can help her. “Would you like to twenty-one again?”

“What?” She shakes her head and comes closer to me. The smile on her face reveals the answer. “Is that even possible.”

“Would you prefer nineteen?” She can easily pass for that age.

“Absolutely not. That’s too much years of school.”

“You can earn a degree here, have that for your records, for the future. It just means going back to being a senior.”

“A senior?”

“Think about it.”

“Yeah.” She smiles and holds onto the black and pink rose dangling on a keychain. It came with the purse for decoration and she immediately took to the mix. “I like that.”

“If you want, I will make it happen.”

“What about you? If I do that will I still see you?”

“I’m not letting you go, Snow.”

“Okay... I can think about it, right? Or do you need an answer before you go up?”

“Later...” I hit the elevator button. “Today I’m just going to get you on her radar.”

She plants a kiss on my cheek. “See you. Good luck.”

Once Neve is already inside Carbon, I shoot Margot Ballinger a message.
