“We weren’t sure if you were going to make it,” Armando said, his eyes lit up with mischief.

Was this a test? I crossed my arms over my chest as I locked down my face. I knew they wouldn’t be able to read anything on my face as I spoke. They didn’t need to know how desperate I was to get out of my circumstances. “Like I said before, I’m pretty much down for anything, so hit me with what you’ve got.”

“We don’t trust easily, but we saw something in you that makes us think you’ll be good for the job.”

I had no idea what they possibly could have seen that would make them think they could trust me. We met twenty-four hours ago, and I sure as shit didn’t trust them.

“There’s been an uptick in sales here at the skate park, and we’re normally at school. We need someone who can take this spot.” Alejandro said so matter-of-factly like they weren’t selling drugs to the skaters here.

I turned to look at the crowd of people enjoying the sun and skating. It wouldn’t last. Once it got cold in a couple of months, they’d be inside, and I’d be without money again.

“Starting off, we’ll pay you a thousand a week. If you move more product than we think you will, we’ll give you a bump.” Armando shrugged like a thousand dollars was chump change to him, and it probably was. I took them in again. I didn’t know shit about designer clothes or brands, but everything they had on looked expensive. Their tennis shoes were at least a couple of hundred bucks. They could definitely afford a thousand a week, if not more.

“And what happens if I get caught?”

Alejandro’s eyes narrowed into slits. “Then you don’t know us.”

“Never even heard of us,” Armando supplied.

Got it. I was on my own.

“When do you want me to start?”

Armando’s brows rose. “Have you ever sold blow before?”

“Can’t say that I have, but I’m not going to try to sell it. They’ll come to me if they want it.”

“Exactly,” they said at the same time, with identical smiles. “I think you’ll do just fine. Make sure to bring a skateboard so that you look like you’re part of the crowd.”

I looked them up and down. They so didn’t look like the skaters here. I didn’t have the baggy clothes they wore, nor did I have a skateboard. Was this a test? I’d steal one of these punks’ boards if I had to.

Armando looked behind me and chuckled. “We’ll have a board waiting for you when you get out of class tomorrow.” He handed me a piece of paper. “Once the park clears out tomorrow, meet us at this address to give us the money, and we’ll give you more product.”

Sounded easy. Too easy.

If this was a setup, I’d kill them when I had a chance.

Alejandro patted me on the shoulder. “Don’t worry. We won’t fuck you over unless you fuck us over.”

I wanted to ask why me, but I didn’t really care. I’d be their best seller for as long as I lasted. By this time next week, I’d be living a whole different life.

Asoft knock at my door has me looking up from my computer screen. Looking across the room, I noticed the time. It was almost midnight. I stretched my arms over my head as I called out. “Come in.”

Ale and Army stepped into my office. They were laughing like they always did when they were together. They had at least a thousand inside jokes that only they understood.

“Jefa,” they said at the same time.

I nodded to them and waited until they sat across from me. “Boys, how are things?”

“Good,” Ale answered.

Army looked to his twin and rolled his eyes. “Better than ever with the new guy.”

“That’s what I like to hear. Where are you going to put him once it’s winter?”
