“I promise you I will never let anything happen to you. Not now. Not ever,” I vowed. I’d never meant anything more in my life. I knew from that moment on I would give my life for Arely without thinking twice about it.
In the distance, the sound of sirens started to fill the otherwise quiet night. I crushed Arely to me, only for her body to feel lifeless in my arms.
“Arely,” I shook her, watching as her arm fell to the side and her hand slapped the ground. Laying her back on the ground, I tried to feel for her pulse, only for nothing to be there.
My heart skipped a beat as I moved my fingers around, desperate to be wrong.
I had no idea what I was doing as I placed my hands over her chest and started to pump. I wasn’t sure if I was even doing it right. My only knowledge was from movies and television shows. Dipping down, I blew two puffs of air into her mouth and started to go back to pumping her chest when I was gripped by the shoulder.
The night had gone deathly silent once I started my attempt at CPR, my heavy breaths the only sound as I tried to bring Arely back. I hadn’t heard the ambulance pull up or anyone get out. My sole concentration was on the beautiful but lifeless woman laid out in front of me.
“We’ll take it from here, sir,” one of the EMTs said. I had no idea which one. I could only sit there and watch as they worked on Arely for a minute before loading her up on the stretcher and placing her in the ambulance. They asked me questions, but I didn’t remember what they were or if I even answered them. All I remembered was sitting beside her holding her hand, when the monitors started to shriek, and one of the EMTs shouted, “Flatline!”
I sat in a daze as I watched the EMT work on Arely. Sticking in an IV and pushing medicine as I gripped her hand even harder, wishing I could give all of my strength to her—except life didn’t work that way. They worked on her until we got to the hospital, only for her to be whisked away and I never saw her again.
