I almost laughed in her face, instead, I opened the door to my car and tossed my backpack inside onto the passenger seat.

She kept going. “It’s up to you, Riley. Goalongwith him and godownwith himorhelp me and save yourself.” I slammed the door shut and moved around the car to the driver’s door. When I tried to pull it open, she pushed it closed.

“There’s nothing to save myself from. And there’s plenty of good dick to keep me here.”

She laughed like I wasn’t serious. “There’s no dick at all allowed in prison, unless you want to fuck one of the guards.” She shrugged. “But you don’t strike me as a girl who’s going to survive being locked up. Your only hope here is to tell me what you know.”

I shook my head. This was already old. And I was already tired of her. All of her bullshit was only going to make it easier on me when I killed her.

This time, I pushed her away and opened my car door. “Riley, I know about the Scorpion Club.” Yeah, she knewsomuch she got the name wrong. “You aren’t that deep in it yet. You can get away from them all. I’ll help you.”

I didn’t need her help. I started the car and hit the shifter down to drive. When I glanced up, Roman stood at the bedroom window, watching Detective Katt Hall walking down the drive to her own parked car on the street.

One of these days, I was going to kill her. It was only a matter of time.

Roman

My guys stopped her down the road from the house and pulled her out of the car. They brought her here because it was what I wanted them to do. And I could hear her cursing, even though my office was mostly soundproofed. She was shrieking like an alley cat, and I picked up my phone while I watched her out the window of my office.

Jerry, one of my guys, blocked her path yet again, and she tried to sprint around him, made a quick pivot and went the other way. Jerry caught her by the waist and lifted her off her feet. She kicked and battled. Feisty as ever. I hoped Jerry was wearing a cup, because if she caught him with one of those boots, he wouldn’t be having kids. Ever.

“Boss?”

“Bring her up.” Jerry hadn’t been able to answer, but Bastian looked up at the window that was blacked out on his side and shot me a thumbs-up. Then Jerry wrestled Riley to the stairs. She wiggled and kicked, threw her head back and he dropped her, but she only made it a few steps before Bastian caught her and threw her over his shoulder in a fireman’s carry.

She pounded her fists into his back, but Bastian was built like a linebacker, and she might as well have been punching a steel wall.

When he dropped her onto her ass on the floor in my office, she was still yelling. “Put me dow—oof!”

I inclined my head, and he closed the office door behind him.

“Who do you fucking think you are? You had me kidnapped?” The shriek was back, and it hit the walls and died an unnatural death, thanks to the padding and extra insulation that was supposed to protect me from the big bass beats and throbbing of dance music that played downstairs.

“Kidnapped? Hardly.” I needed her to calm down so I could extract the information she might’ve given to Hall or that Hall had given to her.

“Fuck you!” She went for the door, and I pulled her back by the shirt. “Let me fucking go!”

I lowered my voice to the deadliest of tones I’d ever spoken. “Sit down and shut up. It’s time you learn the rules.”

“I’m not a damn child, Roman. Certainly, notyourchild, and I don’t need your fucking rules.” Her fists clenched like she was going to punch me.

I pushed her onto the chair and leaned over her, holding her hands against the armrests. “I’m not going to tolerate your mouth today, Riley. Either you sit down, shut up and listen, or I’ll fucking tie you to the chair and gag you until you get with the program.”

She stared at me, nostrils flared, all attitude. But she was quiet, and for now, that was enough. She blinked twice, and I moved back. When she lunged again, I shook my head.

Of fucking course this wouldn’t be easy. I hauled her back by a belt loop this time. “Sit down.” Through gritted teeth with all the anger I could summon in my voice, I was scary enough she sat. “Bastian?”

He walked in. “Give me your cuffs.” He handed me the silver bracelets, and Bastian held her while I used my belt around her middle to secure her so she couldn’t stand and use the chair as a weapon. “One word and I will gag you, Riley. You speak when spoken to. Are we clear?”

“Fuck you.”

But at least she was following the rules. Her rage was so fucking attractive it wouldn’t take much to make me come. Probably not more than a couple pumps.

“I am going to ask you questions, Riley, and if you lie to me, I’ll know.” Maybe. She didn’t have a lot of tells I’d seen. “What did Hall want this morning? What did she say to you?”

Her eyes flashed, then went blank. She was going to lie, was building herself up to it. “She just offered me a ride to school.” She’d answered too readily without telling me to piss off or go fuck myself. She was too calm.

“You have a car.” Plus, it wasn’t even a good lie.
