“Just tell me what it is. I can handle it.”

“Your father has characteristics of Alzheimer’s disease. We’d need to evaluate him. However, we found multiple tumors in the membrane surrounding the brain. I’m not sure how long he’s been living with them. The specific tumor is called a meningioma. He needs to see a specialist. However, I need to preface everything by saying I called a friend from medical school, and he took a look at the scan this morning.”

Ansley blew out another slow breath interlaced with a groan. My fists clench as I brace myself for the worst.

“Just tell me.”

“He wasn’t hopeful. He said if this man were his patient, he’d tell him to get his affairs in order now.”

Neo closed his eyes, emotions pelting him. “Can you give me the information for this doctor so we can set up an appointment?”

"He's in London. One of their best oncologists. His waitlist is long. There are many great doctors here. They just weren't my roommate during med school. I'll send you a list of doctors who have the skills close by. There are a couple in New York City who are great, but that might be more than you're willing to travel."

“Thank you, Doctor Ansley. You’ve been a big help.”

After the call ends, I lean forward and put my head in my hands. Adali is there beside me, comforting me. I shouldn't fall apart. I have no idea where to turn or how find out who is coming at us. They've still not sent word. Dad admitted to doing something that means he owes Gale, and I've got Adali to think about.

“I heard some of that,” Adali whispers. “I’m sorry. I’ll do what I can to help him. You go figure out what’s going on with the men who broke in here.”

My gaze meets hers, and I'm honestly shocked she's willing to help us. She's practically a prisoner here. I cup her cheek and pull her close. I don't really mean to kiss her, but she angles her head so her lips brush against mine. It's electrifying, explosive. Desire zips to my cock, but I don't have time now, and I shouldn't, not until we get everything sorted.

Somehow, I'll figure out everything and take care of the messes my father has created. I'm glad I stopped him from making decisions for the company, but he still could do damage if he had access to any of his contacts. This is bad. We're not in a great position, and more people may try to take advantage of us. The danger is serious, and my resources are low. I'll need a miracle to get out of this.

Adali

This whole thing is messed up. I need to find out what Eric has over Mr. Foster. Eric won’t ever tell me, but maybe Mr. Foster will. I go in search of him, hoping he’ll talk to me.

I find him in the library. He's staring at a book, his eyebrows pinching together as he shakes his head.

“Is everything okay?” I ask as I slide into a chair close to him. He glances over and frowns.

“I can’t make heads or tails of this.”

I move closer and look over his shoulder, reading the words on the page. It's a book about a war in France. "What seems to be the issue?"

“I can’t read any of the words. They make no sense. It’s some foreign language I don’t understand.” Mr. Foster slams the book closed and sits back, sighing heavily.

Concern for him twists through me. The words on the page were English. Something is going on with him, and I have no clue what. "Mr. Foster, would you like me to read the book to you?"

He turns to look at me and blinks. “I have no idea who you are.”

I have a feeling Mr. Foster will be declining quickly. In the short time I've been here, I've seen a wide range from him. There's no way Eric knew he was this bad. Otherwise, he wouldn't have entered into business with Mr. Foster.

“My name is Adali. I’d like to help you if I can.”

Mr. Foster looks down at the book in his lap and then back at me. “I’m not sure you can help. I feel like life is leaking out of my head. I don’t want this. I don’t like feeling helpless.”

“I’m sorry. Would you like to go for a walk?”

He shakes his head. “No. I think I need a nap.”

“Let’s get you settled in bed then. Do you know where your room is?”

Sadness settles in his expression. “I have no clue. Do you know?”

I haven’t been here long enough to know the house or the layout. “I’m afraid I don’t.” I lean forward, hoping I can catch him off guard. “Do you remember the agreement you made with my father?”
