"Of course punishing you will hurt him. You're his daughter."

This time I'm the one who laughs. NG's eyes narrow, and his lips thin. It takes me a moment to recover, and by then, he has a cane in his hand.

“What are you going on about?”

"I'm not his daughter. I'm some project Valery wanted to take on, so people thought she was a saint."

NG’s face goes red before the cane slams against my thigh. Pain slides up and down my leg, making me gasp for air. My knees give way, and I'm on the ground at NG's feet. I blink up at him. Any good feelings I had for this man are gone. He's just as evil as Scorch. I'm going to die.

ChapterFifteen

Niallan (Neo)

The call from Cohen sends panic straight through me. Someone has Adali. I can't imagine how scared she is. Cohen is headed to the hospital. He's alive, and he called, but he won't be of any use. I need to figure out who took my woman and why.

I have to call Gale. I don’t want to. First, I call my father’s Italian contact. It’s an awkward conversation. I need to find out if they abducted Adali without telling them they have a reason to abduct my woman and keep her from me.

After a few minutes of verbal tango, I surmise the mob didn't take Adali, and they have no idea there is a reason to hate my father. I'll have to make sure the skimming my father did is well hidden. They are the mob. Why in hell would my father take their money like that?

I've run out of people who would want to harm us. I can't imagine anyone else putting us in this position. If we fail, their money schemes go bye-bye. Money laundering isn't something you talk openly about. It's well hidden because the IRS will come after those who launder, and they will serve jail time. We've set up the perfect system and are well hidden.

If it's not my father or me this asshole is trying to harm, then it's Gale. I have to call him and find out what in the hell he did.

My hands shake as I punch in his number. This isn’t a call I’ve ever wanted to make. Gale isn’t a friend. He’s the enemy we keep close.

“Niallan Foster, what do I owe this pleasure?”

"What did you do?" I can't believe I asked that question. Anger and fear have wrapped around me, making me feel like I'm close to losing it. I should have smoothed into the questions, but my anger is a ten.

“Do? What are you going on about?” Eric Gale asks.

“I thought about it, called around, and it wasn’t because of us. Why would someone kidnap your daughter?”

Silence greets me, and I know I've hit a nerve. He either didn't know his daughter had been abducted, or he knew and was trying to play games. I take a chance.

“Stop it with the games, Eric. It’s Adali’s life we’re talking about. What is going on?”

“What do you care?” Gale snaps back.

His lack of caring for Adali pisses me off, but right now isn't the time to play that card. I need Adali back. I don't care what they did to her. We can recover from anything. But I need her in my life.

The anger inside turns to fury. "Who has her?" My voice is low, filled with rage and a promise to end whoever has hurt my woman.

Gale clears his throat. I’ve surprised him. Our family may not be the type who goes out and physically hurts others, but I’m not going to roll over.

“You could just let them have her. It would be easier.”

“No!” The word bounces off the wall opposite me.

The door to the office opens, and Dad steps in. The last thing I need is a confused old man. I'm about to tell Dad to get out when I see his eyes are shining brightly, not mired in confusion.

“Tell Gale I know about Mexico City.”

I blink at Dad, wondering what this is about. “Dad knows about Mexico City.”

“Fuck,” Gale curses.

This is not going how I thought it would. I need to find Adali, and I feel I'm getting farther away instead of closer. I'm about to turn the conversation around and demand Gale tell me what's going on when he starts speaking.
