“If Barb guessed the truth,” he said, “others will, too. And I’m no good at hiding my feelings for you.” He gently squeezed her arms. “My feelings are getting stronger every day, darlin’, and maybe they’ve always been this strong, but I’ve never allowed myself to hope until recently.”

“Holt . . .” Macie whispered. She wanted to tell him she felt the same. But she wanted to get over the hurdle of Knox’s appearance first. Have their relationship out in the open with Rex and Heidi. Know that she wasn’t inflicting more pain upon the already injured family.

She moved her hands up his chest and ran her fingers over his open collar. Then she pressed a kiss at the base of his neck.

Holt’s hands settled at her waist, and Macie wrapped her arms about his torso and leaned into him. Holt pulled her into a tight hug, and for a few moments, they stayed like that. Macie closed her eyes, breathing in this man, his strength, his steadiness, and his deep core of loyalty. The sound of an approaching vehicle drew them both apart.

“I thought you said your dad was in the barn,” Macie said.

Holt’s blue eyes shifted from her to the kitchen windows. “Maybe it’s Briggs.” He released her and crossed to the window. “Damn.”

“Who is it?” Macie said, joining him at the window. Then every part of her body went ice cold.

She’d know that black truck anywhere. She remembered the argument they’d had over the cost of getting it lifted.

Knox was back.
