Cara looked surprised. “Oh yeah. She loves it. Although she’s had some health struggles the past couple of years.”

Roman sensed this was a pretty big deal. “Such as . . .?”

Cara released a breath. “She went through breast cancer. She’s in remission now, but I hate that she’s been down that path. It’s like we’re all waiting for the other shoe to drop.”

Roman went silent for a moment, wondering what he should say that would be respectful, yet helpful, too. “I’m really sorry, Cara. Do you feel good about the treatment she received?”

“Oh, sure.” Cara’s expression cleared. “She was going to San Antonio and meeting with great doctors. It’s just . . . you know. I worry.”

Roman could understand that.

“The good news is that my brother Holt has stepped in as ranch manager, which is a huge help to both of my parents. He also runs a horse rehabilitation business on the side. My other brother Knox wants to join in, too, eventually, when his bull-riding career fizzles out.”

“A bull-rider, huh? Is he any good?”

Cara smirked, as if all of her stormy thoughts had passed. “Oh, he’s good. Just don’t know how long he’ll remain uninjured with his fearless personality.” She shrugged. “My sister Evie is back in Prosper now, too. My brother Lane is in college in Arizona right now.”

“Big family.” Roman tried to picture Cara as a teenager, entranced over a cooking show. He’d bet she was a sweet girl. “And the boyfriend? Ancient history?”
