Then, he stole her breath.

He grasped her hand, leaned close, and kissed her cheek.

How long he might have lingered, Cara had no idea, because Thayne’s heavy steps clomped down the hallway toward the kitchen.

By the time Thayne reentered the kitchen, Roman had stepped away, putting a divide between them that felt like an entire canyon.

Thayne now wore slicker-type sweatpants and a long-sleeved Henley, along with his huge cowboy hat. He handed his bundled clothing to Cara, then tapped the brim of his hat. “Gotta break this thing in, right? Or do you have to distress my hat, too?”

Cara held out her hand. Thayne sighed and plucked the hat from his head, handing it over.

Roman watched the interchange, amusement in his eyes.

“I’ll just take care of this,” Cara said. “When you get it back, you’ll be impressed, I promise.”

Thayne nodded. “I’m gonna trust you, ma’am.” He moved to the coffee maker, then searched out a mug.

Roman looked from Cara to Thayne. Their privacy appeared to be over for the time being. “I’m heading to the set.” He paused, his gaze landing on her. “You’re welcome to stop in. You know, check it out. Might be interesting.”

Cara was more than pleased at the invitation. Not surprised, exactly, but this invite felt more personal. Not just obligatory since she was staying for the week. “Sure, I’d love that. I’ll wander over once I get some things going on these clothes.”

She might have stared after Roman too long after he walked out of the kitchen, because Thayne cleared his throat.

She turned to him. “Oh, did you say something?”

He gave a short laugh. “Nope.”
