“Yeah,” he said. “But don’t you think it might make it harder to say goodbye? Mia’s going to be a bear on the plane ride home, and probably for a few days after.”

Cara took a deep breath. “Maybe we can give her something to look forward to.”

He didn’t hesitate. “I like that idea.”

“Do you?”

His smile appeared. “How could I not?”

“Well, I wonder sometimes because you’ve only kissed me once, and that’s when I kissed you first.”

The surprise on Roman’s face quickly turned to amusement, then something else, something more molten. “Hmm. I think I could fix that so you’re more sure about how much I like your idea.”

If Cara had butterflies in her stomach before, now she had hundreds.

Roman glanced past her, as if to make sure they were alone. Then he lifted his other hand and cradled her face.

She was oh so ready, had been for days, yet when his mouth captured hers, she wasn’t prepared for the emotions inside her to burst into flames. Roman kissed her slowly, thoroughly, and with every kiss, every touch, she was being silently told yes.

And it was heaven.

She moved her arms about his neck and pressed into him, kissing him back. He was so solid, warm, and tasted divine.

Roman shifted her onto his lap, and she tangled her fingers into his hair, pulling him even closer. His hands skimmed over her shoulders and down her back, then settled at her hips. Cara sighed when his lips moved to her neck.

“Maybe you could change your plane ticket,” she whispered against his hair.

“Mmm. I wish,” he murmured.

Then his mouth was on hers again, while his fingers brushed the space of bare skin above the waistband of her jeans. Goosebumps skittered across her skin, and the butterflies in her stomach became a horde of activity. Cara felt like she could melt into Roman and never return to regular life as she knew it.

Voices came from outside, and Cara was dimly aware that they were the voices of the girls. They must be finished with the pony ride, and that meant they’d be coming into the house any second. With her dad.

Cara moved her hands to Roman’s shoulders and drew away. “Roman.”

His eyes opened, dazed, and he blinked. “Company?” he rasped.

“Yes.” She shifted off his lap and smoothed her hair back.

Roman sighed, then stood. He held out his hand toward her. She grasped it and rose next to him. Standing when her dad came in was a lot better than kissing on the couch.

“Hang on.” Roman reached for her waistline and tugged her shirt straight.

“Thanks,” she whispered, sure she was blushing.

He only winked, because just then, the front door burst open.

“Daddy!” Mia called, then stopped when she saw her father standing only feet away. “I’m so good at riding a pony that Grandpa Rex said I can ride a horse next.”

Grandpa Rex?

Cara didn’t know what to think about that, and then the man himself came in, holding Ruby’s hand. “That’s right,” he said. “Mia’s mastered the pony ride, and she’s ready for the next step. Tomorrow morning would be a good time, if that works with everyone’s schedule.”

Cara could practically feel Roman’s hesitation and surprise.

Mia moved to his side and grabbed his hand. “Please, Daddy.”

Roman glanced at Cara. “Actually, we’re leaving in a few hours. I just got the plane tickets.”
