Cara turned to see Jennifer, one of the servers, eyeing her in the break room.

“You’ve, like, checked your phone every five minutes.”

Cara very well knew it hadn’t been every five minutes, but the fact that someone had noticed was kind of bothersome. She should be focusing on her job while she was at work.

“You okay?” Jennifer continued.

“Yeah, sure,” Cara said, tucking the phone into her locker. She headed out of the break room and into the kitchen.

When the night finally came to a close, and Cara finished up the final dessert order, she headed back into the break room. She didn’t want to even check her phone, because what if disappointment was waiting for her? Finally, she grabbed it and opened up the screen.

There was a text, but it was from Knox.

When Cara read her brother’s words, her stomach fell.

Did you see the stuff about the Frontier Town series on Twitter?

Cara switched over to the Twitter app. She rarely posted, but she still had an account. So she looked up Roman’s name, scrolled through, and saw that Roman had been tagged quite a bit. And it wasn’t good stuff.

It seemed that Stacy wasn’t going out quietly.

Cara looked up Stacy’s profile, and she had a long string of continued tweets, lambasting the production of Frontier Town. She hadn’t named Roman specifically, but her words were harsh. Calling the director and producer unprofessional, accusing them of playing favorites, paying the male leads more than her.

“You’re not even a lead, Stacy,” Cara muttered.

Was all of this why Roman hadn’t called?

Subdued, Cara gathered her stuff and headed back to her apartment. She wouldn’t call him tonight after all. He was probably dealing with a lot. Once inside, she knew she wouldn’t be sleeping for a while, even though it was nearly midnight. She curled up on the couch and put on the next episode of Frontier Town. The storyline, the acting, the cinematography were all excellent. And . . . there was Stacy in a scene.

Cara skipped through the scene until Stacy was off again.

It was about one in the morning when the next episode started.

Her phone rang, pulling her out of the show. For a second, Cara just stared at Roman’s name on the Caller ID.

Was she dreaming? Why was he calling this late? Did he want to just leave a voicemail? Without giving herself time to analyze more, she answered. “Hello?”

“Did I wake you?”

The sound of his voice sent all kinds of emotions through her. Mostly relief and hope. “Uh, no,” she said. “I took a nap earlier, so I’ve been watching more Frontier Town episodes.”

His exhale was audible. “Ah.”

She didn’t know how to read that, so she said, “You’re up late.”

“Yeah . . . Sorry to call so late. I was going to leave a message if you didn’t answer. Either that or write you a letter, but the mail is kind of slow, and I didn’t want to leave you hanging.”

That phrase stalled her breath. But when he didn’t say anything more, she ventured, “I saw some stuff on social media. Sorry that’s all happening. I guess Stacy isn’t going out quietly?”

“No, she’s not,” Roman said. “She’s violated a bunch of contract stuff, though, so it’s being turned over to the lawyers now.”

“Oh, wow. Crazy.”

“Yeah.”

He went silent again, and Cara was wondering where this conversation was going.

“Look, I know this time of night isn’t the best time to talk since the last twenty-four hours have been nuts, and you probably already feel like I’ve blown you off . . .”
