“Writing down my notes on the class,” she said.

Cara moved around the counter to see her doing just that. In very few words, though, and about half of them misspelled. Still, Cara was impressed.

“Nice idea, Mia. How did you come up with that?”

“Daddy takes notes in his meetings,” she said in a matter-of-fact voice. She looked up at Cara. “Guess what?”

“What?” She loved this kid’s enthusiasm about so much in life.

“I told Daddy that we should stay for your whole cooking class, and he said maybe.”

Cara held back a laugh. “Did you chew him out for telling you the adult way of saying no?”

“Yes, but I think he really meant maybe,” Mia said. “He keeps talking to someone about buying a condo.”

Cara couldn’t answer for a minute because her breathing had stalled. “Who . . . who was he talking to?”

Mia shrugged. “I don’t know.” She returned to her iPad and started typing something again. “I really liked the Torta Barozzi, but we had too much cream with it.”

“Noted,” Cara said with a smile, although her thoughts were now racing. Had Roman just been doing preemptive homework in case this series was picked up?

As if she’d conjured him, the front door opened, and he walked in. Butterflies jumped around in her stomach every time she saw him. She wondered if that would ever change—she hoped not, but until then, she was going to enjoy it.

“Hey there, ladies,” Roman said.

“Daddy!” Mia was off her chair in a half-second and running to her dad. She hugged him tight about his legs, chattering all the while about the cooking class.

“Wow,” Roman said, raising his gaze to Cara’s. “That’s fantastic. Did you save any for me to try?”

Mia released his legs and grasped his hand. “Yeah, over here. I put it on a red plate.”

“Red, huh?” Roman’s eyes were still on Cara. “What about you?” he asked her. “How was class?”

“Good—chaotic, but good.” She met him about halfway, and swooned just a little when he slid a hand behind her neck and kissed her.

Mia gave a loud sigh. “Kissing again!” she said to no one in particular. She tugged at his hand. “Come on, Daddy. It’s basically cold, so we’ll have to stick it in the microwave.”

Roman’s mouth was still on Cara’s, and she wasn’t about to hurry him along. But she felt him smile. “Good, huh?” he murmured, lifting his head. “You’re good, too?”

“I’m good,” she said. “Glad you’re here. We’ve been waiting very patiently.”

“Ha. I can see that.” Roman smirked, then he looked down at Mia. “Hey, sweetie? Daddy has something important to do. Can you open the back door for me and let in the people waiting there?”

Mia frowned. “Who is it?”

“People you know and like.”

Mia’s nose scrunched. “Lila?”

Roman nudged her. “Just open the door, please. I need to wait here with Cara.”

Mia left to do as he asked.

“What’s going on, Roman?” Cara said.

He gave a half smile, but he wasn’t meeting her gaze.

“Are you okay?” she asked.
