Page 116 of Warming His Bed

My breath caught in my lungs for a second before I got back into character to reply. “Compelling argument. I suppose I could let you in for a few minutes while we sort out this…reservation issue.” I moved to the side and gestured for him to come in.

He pushed past me, grazing his hand along mine on the way in, as if he couldn’t not touch me for more than a few seconds even while playing at his stranger act.

I turned away to shut the door as he spoke. “My hope is that you won’t have any reservations regarding what I’m about to ask.”

My heart jolted into overdrive as I turned back to face him.

He took his coat off and laid it across one of the wingback chairs as if he had all the time in the world. No shaking hands or nervous sweat lining his brow. He exuded confidence, like he didn’t have a doubt in the world about what came next for us.

He bent down on his right knee and produced a velvet box from his pocket.

My lungs stopped functioning, but apparently my tear ducts thought they could pull up the slack by working overtime.

“Thank you for opening the door to me tonight. I can’t thank you enough for not taking no for an answer when I slammed the door in your face the night we met. For believing in me when no one else did, not even me. For giving me credit I didn’t deserve, but that I’m grateful for nonetheless.”

He opened the little box to reveal a stunning ring. But it was his eyes that held me captive as he carried on with his speech.

“Thank you for pushing your way into my home and my heart. You’re forever embedded there now. So, I’m asking you to keep opening the door to your heart to me. Every day. For the rest of our lives. Sadie, will you marry me?”

I choked up, and when I didn’t answer quickly enough, he went on.

“You should know that if you say no today, I will keep asking every day until I wear you down.”

I let out a watery laugh and nodded through the tears. “Yes, of course. Yes.”

He stood and slipped the gleaming platinum band holding a huge solitaire diamond on my finger, then pressed his lips to mine. The smile on his face could have lit up an entire city.

While his broody attitude certainly did things to me when we first met, I would never get enough of his heart-stopping grin. When we met, I never could have predicted the range and depth of emotions he had buried under that harsh exterior. I loved every side of this man, and I couldn’t wait to spend the rest of forever seeing how he continued to surprise me.
