The air whooshed out of my lungs and my brows furrowed. I knew he’d lived in Burkette for a few years growing up, but I was so far out of the gossip loop I wouldn’t be privy to that kind of information. And odds were, anyone else she asked wouldn’t tell her.

Kelly Bay loved its gossip, but only when it was between locals. We protected our own, and if Everett did set up camp here, the natives would count him as their own without batting an eye.

“No idea, but I’m not exactly hanging with the crowd who’s in the know.”

“Right.” She let out a huff.

“And I doubt you’re gonna have much luck sniffing around, if that’s why you’re here…”

“Partially. I do actually need to write an article about the festival, but Everett is the big get. And believe me, I know. Everyone suddenly gets amnesia the minute I bring up his name. But I don’t have the luxury of giving up.” She slid her phone into her back pocket and tapped the doorframe with her open palm. “I’ll see you later tonight.”

She was long gone while her words still rang in my ears. I’d given up on the idea of a lot of things over the last few years. The past few days made me wonder if maybe it was time I changed that.
