“I know you can. It takes work, but you can get there.”

He lay back on the pillow behind him and wrapped his arm around me, scooping me into his side. “Are you about done answering everyone who thinks I’ve got you duct-taped up in a closet somewhere?”

“Don’t worry, Aileen is the only one who thought that. And yeah, I got through all my messages except the ones from Kobie. I’m sure she can wait a few more hours.”

“No, go ahead. Read hers and answer them,” he insisted. “I love how involved you are with the festival. With the town. Besides, I want to know I’ve got you all to myself for the rest of the day.”

“Mmmm. I like the sound of that.” I scrolled through Kobie’s messages, and my heart sank for her. “Oh no. Ned Elledge’s mom broke her hip, and he has to stay with her down in Detroit for the next few weeks.”

“Why is Kobie messaging you about Ned Elledge? Was he doing something important for the festival?”

“He was her replacement Valor King.”

“Seriously?” He laughed. “No offense to Ned, but based on what?”

“She didn’t exactly have a deep bench of candidates. He filled a pothole on his own dime.”

A deep line formed between his eyebrows, and he was lost in his own thoughts for a moment. He took a deep breath, coming to a decision. “Tell her I’ll do it.”

“What?” My lips pursed. “Are you sure?” We’d said no more hiding, but this was a complete one-eighty for him.

He nodded without speaking for a few beats. “Yeah. The committee will approve me. They nagged me about it the first couple of years after the accident before they gave up. And Kobie’s in a bind, right?”

“Definitely. She was already grasping at straws before Ned fell through.”

“It’s settled, then,” he said, his mind made up. “Kobie needs help, and this will be a perfect chance for me to redefine myself in front of everyone.”

I stuffed down the nagging voice in the back of my head that said this is too easy. Drew was finally ready to see himself in a different light, and I should be excited and support him. “Okay,” I said, “if you’re sure, then I’ll let her know.”

“I’m sure.” He nodded at me to send the message.

Kobie sent back more emojis and exclamation marks than I’d ever seen in a single message.

I laughed. “I think I’d be underselling it if I said she was excited.”

“Good, now tell her I can’t start any official duties until tomorrow and you’re unavailable for the rest of the day.”

“Done.”

My thumb was barely off the send button before he grabbed my phone and tossed it back onto the pile of clothes on the floor. My protest morphed to a moan as he rolled me on top of him and slid into me.

As promised, we spent the rest of the day in bed together.
