“Still, every time I buy a new phone, I make sure to keep my old number. So maybe I’m just fooling myself.”

I scoot over and wiggle myself into his arms. My heart cries for him right now. I can’t imagine what it must be like.

“I’m so sorry to hear that Joe. How long does she have left?”

“I honestly don’t know. She got twelve years when they sent her in. That would mean she’d be out by now. She’s not out yet I think. Don’t know what happened in there, I stopped getting informed a long time ago.”

We sit in silence for a moment.

“And even if she would ever get out, I wouldn’t want to have her back in my life. The sad thing is that somewhere deep inside, I want her to want to be in my life. That’s not normal behaviour, right?” He shoots me a wary look.

I peck him on his cheek. “Fuck normal Joe, you feel what you feel and that’s that. It’s normal to want to be loved by your mother, even if she’s done nothing to deserve it.”

He scoffs.

“I don’t even think in terms of love when it comes to my mother. Just in wants and needs.”

“That’s sad sweety. It’s okay, but sad all the same.”

His cheek is on my head as he sighs. “Wanna finish watching Deadpool with me?”

I don’t answer him, instead I bend over and pick up his laptop from the floor. A foulmouthed anti-hero is exactly what we need right now.
