She fell back on the couch, absorbing the impact of his statement with her whole body.

He had been good to her. Online, in person, and even at the camp place. Even when he was being bad, he’d been doing it to protect her, she thought.

She sighed. She needed to talk to him, to hear some things from his mouth. What, she wasn’t sure, but she knew she needed to talk to him.

“Where is he?”

“He’s in rehab right now. Will be for another two months. He got into some substances to deal with what he was doing, pretty early on, I think. He’s dealing with almost a decade of random stuff in his system.” Ghost handed her a card with the name Rock-bottom Ranch on it. “But he could use a visitor right now.”

She fingered the smooth, thick card, the corners poking into her palm.

“I’m not trying to add anything else to your plate.” Ghost looked around. “I can see you’re pretty busy, doing lots of great things here. I just thought you should know because he’s never going to tell you. I think he thinks you’re better off without him, and I’m not so sure.”

“I’ll think about it, okay?”

“That’s all I can ask,” Ghost said with a warm smile as he stood to leave.

“Why did you tell me all this?” She needed to know. What was the point? There was no way she would get a happily ever after with a man like Antonio.

Her life was entirely too different right now.

And did she really want to change it for him?

“Because he called you his. While we were there, the claim was staked, but I’m not sure he thinks he’s worthy of you. I came to tell you he is. When two people love each other, it’s worth the sacrifice.”

Her mouth dropped open, shocked. First of all, this guy was way too burly and manly to be talking about things like love and sacrifice. Second of all, did she love him? How would this guy know that?

She didn’t.

At all.

“Okay. Thank you.” She affected a businesslike demeanor, even if it felt fake. Then she softened, realizing how stupid it would be to brush off this guy who seemed to only have the best in his heart. “For everything, really.”

He smiled at her again before letting himself out the door.

She looked at the card in her hand, flipping it over and over, spinning the corners on her palm.
