“I’d rather not, but I’m afraid I have to. Organizer and all.” She waved around at herself absently.
“Do your duty, Cariño. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
After closing his laptop, Antonio heaved a ragged breath. He wiped his chest off with a towel he had slung across his chair. It was time to go to work; the compound was waking. He could hear Hector’s footsteps get closer as he came down the hallway.
He buttoned up his shirt and stood, readying himself.
“El Cuchillo wants an update on the next extraction by lunch.” Hector’s rapid-fire Spanish was a contrast to Katherine’s slow lazy drawling English, splashing him with a bucket of cold water.
“I’ll meet with him. I have plans in the US Friday.” Katherine’s high school reunion was Friday, and he was going to surprise her. Mixing business with pleasure was never a good idea, but she was imbedded in his skin and he couldn’t resist it. He had to go to the US anyway for the boss. He might as well use it to see her.
Touch her. Feel her.
“Good.” Hector’s smile turned into something a bit scary. But as El Cuchillo’s second-in-charge, it was common. Hector was a little unhinged. Antonio had to work with him but didn’t trust him at all.
