So I stayed. As I watched her wither away, I realized the future changes so quickly, with one small action. By the time she’d passed, I’d been granted a discharge, so I looked for other things. At the time, everything seemed so hopeless as my plans disintegrated. All the money I had saved to send back was gone, and I was in almost the exact same place as when I’d joined.

So I joined another department, one that recruited me pretty hard. As a former soldier, some basic computer skills I’d taught myself, and a few other requirements, I was given this beautiful story of being a hero.

But I’d have to give up any immediate dreams of a family. It wasn’t hard. There were no women in my life to make a family with, so I signed up to be a hero.

And you know how very unheroic I was. The rest, as they say, is history.

I tell you this not to try to one-up you on story time, but to let you know that I can understand some of what you tell me.

It wasn’t enough. It couldn’t be enough. But it was what he had.

A honk outside drew his attention to the window. A beat-up pickup from the sheriff’s office pulling a trailer was outside.

After the initial, habitual skip of his heartbeat that would probably never go away when he saw law enforcement, he stood to greet his new friend.

Chip was bringing him his new shipment of rescues, and he needed to get them inside the barn he’d recently fixed up.

He had a plan for the healing of the malnourished animals that were going to be in his care. He had resources with the local ag extension, who was helping him a lot. He had the hefty hush money check from the government to fund it.

He also had a hole in his insides where his Cariño had been.
