“Um… according to my therapist, making a huge mistake,” she replied, hoping for levity.

He came down the steps, his giant legs eating the distance between them. But he didn’t speak, and his expression was unreadable.

With an awkward laugh, she said, “I never can tell what you’re thinking. Throw me a bone here. Was it a mistake?”

“No.” He reached for her, but stopped just shy of touching her. “I’m just not sure what to do now.”

She needed to make her expectations clear. She shouldn’t just show up and expect him to know what she was thinking. This wasn’t a letter. She had to man up and tell him what she wanted from this trip.

“A hug would be nice, for starters.”

Without another word, he scooped her into his strong arms and swung her around. His body was harder than last time she’d hugged him, his shoulders able to carry the weight of the world, but she honestly hoped they worked together so he didn’t have to.

He set her back down but didn’t release her. She looked up into his dark eyes, seeing deep pools of emotion.

Not thinking about any repercussions, she rose on her tiptoes and closed the distance between them.

She went in for a peck on his lips, but as soon as they touched, electricity snapped between them and his grip tightened on her hips as she opened her mouth.

Their tongues swirled together on a groan. His? Hers? Both of theirs? It was impossible to tell because she was utterly lost to the sensations. Her mind whirled as his hands roamed up her spine, cradling her head in his hands, holding her close. She pushed up against his body, wanting to feel everything, but not having the wherewithal to explore on her own. Instead, her hands gripped his strong biceps in a death grip.

He broke the kiss, but didn’t let go of her head, holding her forehead to his.

“That was more than a hug, Cariño.”

She laughed then, unable to stop herself. Based on the kiss, she wasn’t unwelcome.

“I was hoping I could stay with you for a little while and see what happens with us.”

“Us?”

She nodded. “I can get a hotel in town if you don’t have room. Or don’t want me underfoot. If this was a bad idea altogether, I can—”

He stopped her with another peck on her lips, this one more chaste.

“No. Don’t you dare. It’s just unexpected.” His eyes searched hers, and she wanted to reassure him.

“I can help you work around here. I just don’t know what to do.” He smiled at her words.

“I’ll show you what I know, but I barely know myself. I was just about to go feed the horses. Want to come? Or are you hungry? Something else?”

She wanted to see his routine, know what he did, see how he did it.

“Let’s feed the horses.”
