ChapterTwenty-Six

In the next instant, doubt creeps in. Could he just be saying that? Also, even if he’s telling the truth, why did he watch the show? Was it because he lusted after one of the leads, or did he want to understand women better?

He touches my forearm. “Are you okay?”

“Why?”

“Because you’re looking at me funny.”

I blink a few times. “I mean, ‘why did you watch the show?’”

He smiles. “Let’s go to the living room and get comfy. Then we’ll talk.”

What a tease. I follow him to the couch and plop down next to him, my skin tingling as our knees touch.

“Spill,” I growl.

“I think it should be obvious,” he says.

I stare at him blankly.

“Mikhail Baryshnikov,” he says with exasperation.

Oh. How did I not think of that?

“He was the guy who played ‘the Russian’ in the last season,” Art says. If the topic were anything but Sex and the City, he would be totally mansplaining, but I love this too much to complain as he continues. “In case you didn’t know, in real life, he’s a ballet legend—and, like me, was born in Riga.”

I grimace ruefully. “I feel silly now.”

“Don’t. How could you know that man was my idol? I started with those nine episodes he was in, then got hooked and watched everything.”

“So what’s your favorite episode?”

He scratches his chin. “Season six, episode twelve.”

I grin. “Is that the one where Baryshnikov first shows up?”

He nods. “What about you? What’s your fave?”

“Season one, episode nine,” I say without hesitation. “It’s called The Turtle and The Hare.”

He squints, then shakes his head. “Hard to remember from just the title. What was it about?”

“It’s the one where they get The Rabbit.”

“The Rabbit? Is that another cat?”

I laugh. “It’s a vibrator with ears. That episode reassured women that it’s okay to masturbate. If even Charlotte was happy to do it, why not them?”

“I think I remember now. And it makes sense. The vibrator was your Baryshnikov.”

My grin stretches from ear to ear. “What’s your least favorite?”

“The movies,” he says, making the word sound like a curse.

“Agreed. Anything after the last episode of season six is subpar.”

He nods with evident seriousness, and we go over our least favorite moments in the movies—of which there are many.
