“Lily, this is my husband, the Earl of Edgemere.”

Lily started in surprise. Her bastard sister had married an earl? And a handsome one at that.

Ash’s arm slipped about her waist, and she pressed into his side. “It’s nice to meet you.”

Arabella’s eyes were no longer wide, but she gave Ash a very long look. “And you?”

“Arabella, Lily has some questions about Bash and Baxter. Perhaps you can answer them.”

Arabella shook her head. “I’d have thought she’d have far more information than me. I didn’t really want much of a relationship with them.”

Now, that sounded strikingly familiar.

“Perhaps we could share what we know,” Lily began as she eased away from Ash a bit. Not entirely, but somehow Lily trusted Arabella just enough that she could share with her. “I’ve been attempting to discern their involvement in my kidnapping.”

Arabella cocked her head, frowning. “I see.” She waved Lily forward. “Let’s talk as we ride. My sister-in-law, Lizzie, is also in the carriage, but you’ll like her. She’s as kind as she is sweet. Unlike me.”

But Lily didn’t let go of Ash’s hand. Four days trapped in a carriage had made her leery. “After we’re done talking, may I ride with you?” she asked Ash, attempting to catch her breath. “I don’t want to stay in there.”

Ash squeezed her waist. “Of course.” Then he leaned closer to whisper. “I’ll be just outside the carriage while you are.”

With a tentative nod, she released his hand and started toward the carriage.
