He looked shocked, the injury of her words making him forget his current predicament. “Watch your fucking mouth when you’re talking to me,” he thundered.

From the look on his face, he expected her to be afraid, or to at least try to placate him.

She did neither. “Whatever, dude,” she muttered before looking at me. “You were saying?”

Circumstances aside, I wanted to smile at the expression on her face. It was the mix between frazzled, annoyed, and amused that I sometimes saw from her. What I didn’t see was fear.

I hoped it stayed that way.

“I found out who was behind the attempt on your life, Amethyst,” I said.

She tapped her foot. “Well, who was it?”

I didn’t answer, and she glared at me. I watched her expression change as the seconds ticked by.

Saw the surprise and disbelief when she looked at Keenan and then looked back at me.

“You aren’t suggesting…” She tilted her head over at Keenan, who stared at her, no hint of his earlier anger to be found.

“I’m not suggesting anything. I’m telling you what’s true,” I said.

“Bullshit,” she spat, her disbelief clear.

That annoyed me, but not nearly as much as the smile that slowly spread across her face. It was big, bright, and if I didn’t know better, I would have thought it was genuine.

It wasn’t.

“Keenan has no reason to harm me. And besides, he’s not like you,” she said.

That stung, but I ignored it and continued on.

“No, he’s not like me, because he got caught.”

“So did you,” she countered.

It was my turn to smile. “Did I?”

She wanted to argue the point but couldn’t. Instead, she looked at Keenan, her expression softening.

“I’m sorry about this…misunderstanding, Keenan,” she said.

“You’re apologizing to him?” I asked, unable to keep my temper at bay.

I calmed myself before she answered and remembered my admonition about anger not being helpful.

She looked at me.

“Of course, I am. He hasn’t done anything to deserve this kind of treatment.”

“Keenan, do you want to tell Amethyst what you’ve been up to?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

He stammered, and something in his voice caught Amethyst’s attention.

She looked at him kindly, though the sympathy that had lit her gaze just moments ago wasn’t quite so apparent.

“Why are you looking at me like that, Ames?”
