“You mean the trust fund he’s desperately trying to get into. That one?”

“Yeah,” I responded.

“That trust fund disproves your point, and you know it. We’re still looking for the documents, but if the trust is standard, she’d be worthless to him dead. If anything, he’d try to keep her underfoot,” Elias said.

“And you don’t think it’s weird that he’s not concerned that she’s gone?”

“No. I think it’s healthy. He, unlike you, accepts that the woman wanted to be somewhere else, so she fucking left. I know that sucks for you, but you gotta get it through your head, Davit. She wanted to leave, and she doesn’t want to be found. It’s probably best for everyone that she’s not,” he said.

I didn’t argue with him, didn’t bother.

Still, I had to admit that after a week of fruitless searching, if I looked at the evidence, I’d be left with no other conclusion:

Amethyst had left of her own free will, which meant she didn’t want to be here.

Didn’t want to be with me.

As much as I hated to admit the truth of it, my heart dropped a little bit at the very thought.

“I’m sure you have better things to do, Elias,” I said after I had signed out of the computer and then stood.

“And you do too, Davit. There are things that need your attention here and now. You assured me that Amethyst James would not be a distraction. And as a Petrosyan, I know you keep your word.”

“I do,” I said.

I waited a long moment then looked at him.

“The next shipment is in two weeks.”

“Can I assume it will go off without a hitch?”

“It will,” I said.

Elias nodded then walked toward the door. Before he reached it, he stopped and slapped me on the shoulder. It was weak as far as reassurances went, but the fact that he felt compelled to try to reassure me at all said everything.

“No one ever said this life would be easy,” he said.

“They didn’t,” I responded.

“But remember what’s important. Your family,” he said.

“Always,” I respond automatically.

And I meant it.

In fact, I couldn’t say what had come over me.

It wasn’t like me to let anything distract me, and as much as I might want to argue with Elias, Amethyst was a distraction. Her leaving was even more of one, but it was up to me to get focused on my business, which was what mattered.

Elias nodded then left, and I stayed in the safe house for a long while, trying to tell myself to let it go.

Amethyst had left.

It wasn’t ideal because I couldn’t keep tabs on her, couldn’t make sure she was safe.

But she had no evidence against the family, and I knew she wouldn’t talk anyway. Between the evidence I had planted and her knowledge of Keenan’s death, she had as much to lose as we all did.

I told myself that, told myself again.
