She gave me a half smile in return, then looked at her computer, effectively dismissing me.

Irritating, but I had bigger things to worry about.

As I always had, I knocked on the door and waited on his command that I enter. Once he did, I opened the door and stepped in.

“Good morning, sir. You wanted to—”

I broke off when I realized he wasn’t alone then scrambled to recover quickly.

“You wanted to see me?”

“Close the door and sit, Amy,” he said.

I forced myself to move and closed the door.

As I approached his desk, he frowned. “Aren’t you going to say good morning to Keenan?”

“Good morning, Keenan,” I said, turning toward him.

My voice was even, but I didn’t make eye contact.

That made me feel weak, but there was no alternative.

“Good morning, Amy. You look healthy, as usual,” he said.

“Thank you,” I murmured, though inside I was rebelling.

Healthy? What the fuck kind of comment was that?

Probably some underhanded jab as payback for the way I’d treated him when he’d come by my office. One I knew he would expect me to ignore.

But after all, I’d given him no reason to expect anything different.

My annoyance rising and my mood lowering, something I hadn’t thought possible, I looked at my father, hoping to get on more of an even keel.

“I see you brought your notepad,” my father said.

“Of course, sir,” I said.

He smiled, and I couldn’t help how happy that made me.

He seldom acknowledged me, so seeing his pleasure about anything was welcome.

“I called you in because Keenan needs some help,” my father said.

“What kind?” I asked, trying to keep my voice light, emotionless.

“His assistant is out for a while. Wisdom teeth or something. I want you to step in for her,” my father said.

Like hell.

I despised the sight of him, hated how he made me feel. There was no way I should be working for him.

But as strong as my revulsion was for him, I found myself nodding. “Of course, sir. Whatever you need.”

Before he had even hired me here, he made it clear that his expectation was that I would do whatever was asked of me and do it well.

And if that meant playing secretary for my mortal enemy, then I would do it.
