“You still here?”

I started at the sound of the voice then smiled when I recognized who owned it.

I twisted my neck, trying to stretch away the stiffness, then turned to look at Josh as he approached.

“Yes, I’m still here. It’s not that late, is it?”

The records department was in the interior of the building, and my office didn’t have a window.

He frowned, his dark eyebrows dropping low. “Amy, it’s nearly nine.”

“Wow!” I said, looking at my watch. “I guess I got carried away.”

I stood, stretched, my stiff bones cracking with relief.

“Seems you did. But you’re in luck, my friend.” Josh smiled, the crinkles around his eyes giving his handsome face a softness I didn’t often see.

“What does that mean?” I said, tilting my head to look at him.

I breathed in deep, the sight of him threatening to take my breath away.

He had changed, and the khakis and polo that were basically his daily uniform had been replaced with sweatpants and a T-shirt.

A very tight T-shirt.

“Well, I have a couple things I want to finish up, and I figured you’d be here, so I bought Carl’s.”

He lifted the bag he held, and this time I did let out the sigh.

“Pastrami?”

I sounded downright desperate and didn’t care one bit. My stomach didn’t either, if the low growl was anything to go by.

He nodded, and I smiled.

“Have I told you you’re a genius?” I asked.

“Not today,” he said.

“Well, let me fix that. You, Josh Kelley, are a genius. And a very good friend,” I said.

“Come on. The conference room is empty.”

He tilted his head down the hallway and then started to walk. I followed behind him, trying not to appear eager, but I was.

“This is nice,” I said after we had settled at the conference table.

“What’s that?” he asked around a bite.

“This pastrami sandwich is amazing,” I said. “And the company’s not too bad.”

I smiled, though I knew there had been no sting in my words.

“You wound me,” he said, throwing a large hand over his heart.

“I doubt it.”

I took another bite and looked out of the window.
