ELEVEN

Davit

The slammingcar door was like a bucket of ice water, cooling the inferno that was raging between Amethyst and me.

Worse, it took away whatever she had been going to say.

Her eyes, which had seconds ago been wide and passion-filled, narrowed, and I watched as she gained control of herself.

Still, I felt compelled to push.

“What is it, Amethyst?” I asked.

I waited, the air tense in a different way than it had been before, and when she blinked, I saw that the moment had passed.

“Nothing,” she said, shaking her head. “I need to get back.”

She practically scurried away. Everything in me demanded I go after her, which was exactly why I didn’t.

I watched as she got into the elevator, then waited a few more moments before heading back to work. I went through the motions but was distracted the entire day.

I wasn’t sure whether I was happy or sad that our kiss had been interrupted.

There were reasons that I should be happy, and I definitely didn’t need any more complications than I already had.

But still…

I didn’t get it, what it was about Amethyst James that called to me so, made me want her, but I did.

I kept my distance, figuring that she needed the space and knowing that I sure as fuck did.

But it was difficult.

During the day that passed and the day after that, the desire to see her was so strong that I could barely ignore it.

But I did.

I made it through another tortuous day without her before returning to Josh Kelley’s apartment.

I wasn’t surprised when I found Elias waiting for me.

“What do you want?” I asked.

“To see you, brother,” he said.

“I doubt it.”

“Fine. I’ll cut to the chase. Our problem from the docks?” he said.

“What problem?” I responded.

“Amy James,” he said, his challenge clear. He was telling me that he was watching and doing research of his own.

“Amethyst,” I corrected.

“Whatever. That problem from the docks,” he said.

“You’ve been digging into this when I told you I had it handled?” I turned to face him.
