After Keenan, I’d had myself checked for everything and hadn’t been with anyone since.
“Just so you know. I’ve never done that before,” he said.
“And what’s that?”
“Unprotected sex,” he said.
“Okay,” I said for lack of anything else to say.
“So what happened with you and Keenan?”
“What?” I asked, practically choking on the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
“I assume he’s the reason you thought me kissing you was some kind of trick.”
“I don’t know why you’d think that,” I said, though I wasn’t convincing.
He said nothing, just watched as I ate the sandwich.
“Yes, he’s the reason,” I finally admitted, somehow knowing he wouldn’t let it go.
“So what happened?”
I looked at him as I finished my sandwich, wondering what I should say.
Fuck it, I thought. There wasn’t much more I could do to embarrass myself or be any stupider than I had already been, so what did I have to lose?
“We dated while we were in college,” I said.
“Huh,” he responded.
I shrugged. “Well, I guess I should say I thought we were dating.”
“Meaning?” he asked.
“Meaning he was a poor college student, just like I was a poor college student. Busy with classes and work. So I didn’t think anything of it that we didn’t really go out on dates. Figured conflicting schedules was the reason I’d never met his family.”
“Oh,” Davit said.
“You get the picture now?” I asked.
“He was using you.”
The lack of judgment in his voice made me feel that much worse.
“Yep. And I was too stupid to see it. A dumb fat girl who thought she was in love.”
He frowned but didn’t say anything.
“While Keenan, on the other hand, was a smart asshole who saw easy sex and the potential for a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow,” I said.
“How so?”
“I told him he’d be perfect for James Industries. He was smart, a great salesman. I told him he could help the company expand.”
“And you put in a good word for him with your father?”
I laughed. “A good word from me would not help anyone with my father. So, no. But I had Carol schedule his interview first. Because I know the hiring committee gets pretty cranky after a long day of interviews. And apparently that did the trick.”
