I’d helped get him through calculus and physics, and over those two semesters, we’d developed what I thought was a special relationship.

We got to know each other as friends and found that we shared a lot of the same interests.

Over time, it had grown into something more.

Sure, he was busy student athlete who didn’t have time for conventional dates. But we’d get together and study, me quizzing him on this or that topic as I worked on my computer science classwork.

I’d thought it was a dream, so much so that my head was filled with the sound of wedding bells and images of the beautiful babies we would raise together.

The life that we would build.

To think that I’d been so stupid.

“You’re not very talkative today,” he said, interrupting my trip down memory lane.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t realize I had invited you in for a talk,” I responded.

He laughed, blowing off whatever censure was in my words.

“I’m glad I ran into you. It seems like every time I see you, Josh Kelley is somewhere around,” Keenan said.

His previously loose expression suddenly became tense, borderline angry.

That wasn’t a surprise though.

Keenan had hated Josh on sight and did nothing to hide that fact.

I wasn’t sure whether Josh returned the feeling. Josh was polite when it was necessary, but he otherwise treated Keenan like a nonentity.

He never treated me like that, and I’d never seen him do that with anyone else either. My lips turned up in a smile at the thought of Josh being not so fond of Keenan either.

“Your smile is still so beautiful,” Keenan whispered, his voice just this side of husky.

The thank you almost came out automatically, but I managed to catch it and then looked at my computer screen. I’d never been good at taking compliments, so Keenan probably thought I was being coy.

I wasn’t.

His words and tone of voice made me want to hurl, but I wouldn’t correct what I knew he assumed. I stayed quiet, hoping he’d eventually get the hint, and the sooner the better.

“Have you started watching that new fantasy show? I seem to remember you loving those books,” he said.

“I haven’t gotten around to it,” I responded, never once taking my eyes off the screen.

“Well, you should. I think you’ll really like it. I’m interested to hear how you think it compares to the books.”

“Uh-huh,” I said, focusing on the spreadsheet as though it held the secrets of the universe.

“Maybe we could get together and check it out? I only finished the first episode,” he said.

“Maybe,” I said, when what I was thinking was no way in hell.

I kept typing, but Keenan didn’t seem to get the hint.

Or wasn’t willing to take it.

“It’s really cool that you do this stuff,” he said.

“What stuff?”
