“For Josh? Or for Davit?”

“Josh doesn’t exist,” I reminded her.

“No, he doesn’t,” she said, something in her voice giving me pause.

But I ignored it. “What did you expect for Davit?”

“A cave? Some kind of high-tech crime lair. Not just a regular—fancy, mind you—but still a regular one-story flat.”

“Are you disappointed?” I asked.

“I haven’t decided yet,” she responded.

“Have some water,” I said, and I handed her a bottle.

“I’m fine,” she answered, waving her hand to refuse the bottle.

“Drink the water, Amethyst.”

She held my gaze for a long moment but then did as I instructed without argument, and when she was finished, she looked at me.

“I need to…”

“What do you need?” I asked, looking at her with concern.

She shrugged. “I don’t know. Shower. Sleep. Something.”

“Okay, you’ve had your water. How about a real drink?”

“Yeah. Thanks,” she said.

I brought her over a tumbler of scotch, and she crinkled up her face as she swallowed it.

“This shit tastes terrible,” she said when she finished.

“It’s the best money can buy,” I responded, drinking my own.

“Well, it tastes like ass. But I can’t feel my lips, so I guess it’s doing the job,” she said.

I laughed, and she returned it with a smile.

“Come on,” I said, gesturing for her to stand up.

She did, and I led her down the hall and into my bedroom.

“This is yours,” she said, looking around.

“Yeah,” I answered.

She didn’t comment on what she saw but instead stood still, waiting for something, though I didn’t dare ask what.

After a few long-feeling seconds of silence, I pushed ahead. “The bathroom is in there. You can shower. Then you can rest if you want to. And look in the drawers to find something to wear if you’d like.”

“Thank you, Davit,” she whispered.

Her voice was quiet, pensive, but I could sense the sincerity in the words.

Could sense how much she wanted to rely on me.
