I smiled, giggling at my own stupid joke, while the baby just lay there.

“We’ll see you when you get here,” Davit said.

He hung up, then beamed down at me.

He hadn’t stopped smiling since Dr. Mueller had laid her on my chest.

“A girl,” he said.

“Yeah,” I responded.

“What should we name her?” he asked.

Of course I had an idea. We had always called the baby “him,” but I’d thought about names for a girl too. But with all that had happened, I hadn’t mentioned it to him.

I looked at him, and something in my expression made him freeze.

“What is it, Amethyst?” he prodded.

“I was hoping we could name her Crystal. After my mother,” I said.

He didn’t say anything for a long while, so long that I worried.

Then he smiled, his eyes bright, radiating the joy that I felt. He nodded and then looked down.

“Hello, Crystal. Im sirelis,” he whispered to the baby.

And as I lay there, my baby on my chest, my husband at my side, I knew I had never been happier.
