Thirty-One

Amethyst

Davit was calm,so calm that it only made me that much more terrified.

This was wrong.

I knew that, I could tell, but I told myself to trust Davit.

Knew that he would protect us.

There was no other option.

He pushed the door open and stepped inside.

I stayed behind him, trying to mirror his every move.

He held my hand held tight, but otherwise, he was completely focused.

He looked like he knew what he was doing, looked like he could handle it.

I didn’t know what I was doing, knew I couldn’t handle it.

I just knew that everything inside of me screamed through to run and find Crystal.

Also knew that doing that might make it worse.

So, determined not to fall apart, I followed behind him.

I breathed in a rough exhale when I saw the figure lying on the floor.

One of the guards.

I didn’t have to look closely to know that he was gone.

Even without the massive pool of blood that had formed on the dining room floor, the glassy look in his eyes, the complete absence of life, had given it away.

Davit knew it too, but didn’t give any outward reaction.

Instead, he grabbed my hand tighter and moved deeper into the house.

Gave the same almost dismissive glance to the two guards who lay in the kitchen.

I couldn’t bring myself to look at them, not too closely, anyway, but I knew they were gone.

There was a stillness, a lack of movement in the house that threatened to shatter what little composure I had.

Davit must have sensed that, for he squeezed my hand, then stopped, met my eye.

I saw steely determination in his, and tried to take some of that, hold it to myself.

I would be strong.

For her, I would be strong.

We made our way through the house, stopped at the front door where we saw two more guards.

That made a total of five.
