Four

Davit

She lookedlike she had seen a ghost.

Or the devil.

She’d never seemed so afraid, not even when I had held the gun on her.

Not even when she had known that Keenan was going to die.

“I…”

Her voice started out low, and eventually faded away.

“You okay, Jennifer?”

The man who had been talking to her reached out and wrapped his hands around her arms.

Touched her like he had the right to.

I acted on instinct, my hand at my holster, the gun pointed at him before I fully formed the thought.

“No!” she screamed.

“Come on,” the man said, preparing to run.

But he didn’t leave her, which I could respect.

What I wouldn’t do was let him stand in my way.

“Go, Chris,” she whispered, her voice low, urgent.

He tugged at her.

“You should listen,” I said, my gun trained on him, my eyes never leaving her.

I could feel his gaze on her, and sense the moment he gave up.

“Wait,” I said.

I looked away from Amethyst to him.

“I was never here. And she wasn’t either,” I said, my voice low.

“You…”

He trailed off, and I took a step closer to her, but kept my arm raised.

“I was never here. And neither was she,” I repeated.

I didn’t say the rest, knew that my eyes promised retribution if he defied me.

“You were never here, and neither was she,” he parroted.

“Very good.”

I put the gun in the holster and watched the man back away. He was afraid, but he would comply. One of my men would pay him a visit to make sure he did.
