“Well, what?” I asked.

“You only have a few clothes,” he said.

“I…” I was going to say that I could make do, but while nice, the few outfits Davit had gotten for me wouldn’t cut it forever.

“Is there a some place around here I could go?” I asked.

“With what money?” he said.

It was my turn to glare; in spite of my earlier admonitions, I felt myself taking the bait.

“Look, Davit,” I said, my teeth clenched. “I understand that I’m at your mercy. Do you want me to beg for new clothes, or are you pointing this out because you have a solution in mind?”

His eyes flashed again, with a feeling that looked a lot like guilt. “I was just kidding, Amethyst.”

I looked away, feeling guilt myself now. As much as I was trying to hold onto my anger, told myself that he had lied to me, was dangerous, I still didn’t want to see Davit hurt.

Which said things about me I didn’t want to consider.

“Sorry,” I muttered.

His expression softened, though he didn’t address my apology. “Kayla will be here in about fifteen minutes. She’ll take you to get some new things.”

“Kayla?” I asked, remembering he’d mentioned the name before, though I was too distracted at the time to ask about it.

“An employee of Elias’s,” Davit said.

Then, he stood and headed toward the door.

He stopped only long enough to call over his shoulder, “Make sure you eat breakfast.”

Then he was gone.

“Make sure you eat breakfast,” I said, mimicking him, feeling silly, but also having my first real smile of the morning.

I did eat breakfast, refusing to be impressed or pleased by the fact that he seemed to have gotten everything on the menu.

Instead, I enjoyed my makeshift smorgasbord, and then considered who this Kayla might be.

I didn’t know much about the Petrosyan family, his brother Elias, and certainly knew nothing about their employees.

So I wondered what she would be like.

Probably matronly, cold, and intimidating.

Just the person I wanted to spend my day shopping with.

I chewed over that thought as I finished breakfast and was so preoccupied that I jumped when I heard a knock on the door.

“Come in,” I said tentatively.

Davit wouldn’t have knocked, but I wasn’t sure what the protocol was.

At the same time, I didn’t want to keep whoever Kayla was waiting.

For some reason, I stood as the door opened, curiosity and nerves pushing me to my feet.

“Ms. James?” came a soft, young-sounding voice.
