She looked at me, studying me, trying to figure out if she could believe me.

“Had no intention?”

Those words wounded, hurt me deeply, but I couldn’t let that show.

“You will be with him,” I said.

I could see her relief, practically feel it, but I grabbed her chin, turned her to face me.

“But, Amethyst, don’t ever try to keep my child away from me again,” I said.

She looked at me, and then nodded.

When I was certain she understood, I stood up and moved away from her.

It wasn’t fair, but I couldn’t bear being close to her, not knowing what she thought of me.

“Order what you like for dinner and get some rest,” I said.

“Davit—”

I didn’t stop.

Instead, I left the hotel suite and didn’t look back.

Davit

“The detailsof his release are still being worked out,” Elias said.

“Uh-huh,” I responded.

“And aliens are going to invade tomorrow,” he said.

“Okay,” I responded.

“And I’m going to blow your fucking brains out if you don’t pay attention and tell me what’s bothering you,” he said.

I only looked at him when I heard the familiar click of a gun cocking.

“What’s the problem, Elias?” I asked.

“I have a fucking gun to your head, and you ask me what the problem is?”

He lowered the gun, then looked at me.

“What?” I said.

“You’re not here, Davit.”

“I’m fine,” I said.

“You’re not. I told you this was exactly what I wanted to avoid. You’re distracted, and it probably has something to do with that bitch and her baby,” he said.

I snarled, my face twisting. “My baby, Elias. Out of respect, I’m going to overlook your insult. But don’t speak of her that way again,” I said.

“Are you threatening me?” He leaned back in his chair, showing off how at ease he was.
