“I won’t beable to join you for the walk today,” I said to Amethyst one morning after we had finished breakfast.

“Fine,” she responded.

Her voice was lacking inflection, but I could see her disappointment.

“I have something I need to take care of,” I said.

“I said it was fine,” she responded.

And everything about her voice, and demeanor, told me that it was.

Still, her easy acquiescence didn’t sit right.

Of course, it could be me who was reading into things.

I had come to treasure our walks, just as I treasured all the time I spent with her.

Maybe she didn’t feel the same.

The question was on the tip of my tongue, and I almost asked it.

But at the very last second, I held back.

“I’ll be back later,” I said.

“Okay,” she said with a nod.

“I’m going to meet my brother,” I added.

She smiled softly, almost indulgently.

I knew that I was babbling, but I somehow couldn’t stop myself.

“He wants to meet you,” I muttered.

That got a reaction out of her.

“Meet me?” she asked, her eyebrow arched.

I nodded.

“Why?”

“You are the mother of his niece or nephew. He wants to know who you are,” I said.

She snorted. “Like I’m supposed to believe that he hasn’t had me checked out.”

“He has,” I said.

It had been a bone of contention between us.

I told him I had everything as it related to Amethyst covered, but he felt compelled to do his own research. Not a surprise, but at least in my mind, another indication that he didn’t trust me.

He had waved my concerns away, but it annoyed me, nonetheless.
