I watched her reaction, used to women being struck by my brother’s good looks, the charm that he exuded when he chose to. The little bit of fear that was practically unavoidable.

She didn’t seem too taken in by his looks and charm, but I could see that she was terrified.

“Amethyst,” I said.

“Oh, sorry,” she said, sticking her hand out to take Elias’s offered one.

“Pleased to meet you,” he said.

“Is that true?” she asked, tilting her head in question.

Her question seemed to take him off guard, which was rare.

“Is what true?”

“Are you pleased to meet me, Elias?”

He looked at her, his brow raised, then looked at me.

“That has yet to be determined,” he answered.

“And how far apart are you?”I asked.

“Eight years,” he responded, and when Elias looked at Davit, I could see the affection.

It surprised me.

The man was far too handsome for his own good, but there was also a distance to him that I had rarely encountered.

But, while his walls were still intact, I didn’t think he wanted to murder me.

“What?” he asked.

“What do you mean?” I responded, pushing around the remnants of the food on my plate in order to avoid his piercing gaze.

“You were looking at me like there was another question you wanted to ask. What was it?”

“Well,” I said, considering what to say.

Deciding on the truth.

“We’ve had dinner, so I was wondering if you’ve decided whether or not you’re going to murder me,” I said.

He looked at me, laughed.

“I have to say, Ms. James, I’ve rarely encountered someone so direct.”

“It that a good thing or bad thing?” I asked.

“That depends,” he responded.

“Tell me,” I said.

He looked at me for a long moment and then looked at Davit.
