“But now?” Elias said.

My voice sounded firm, but any stubbornness or strength I was projecting was probably lost when I pushed my glasses up my nose.

“Then it’s settled.” He leaned back in his chair.

“What’s settled?” I asked.

“I won’t have you murdered. Both because of my niece or nephew, and because I’m surprisingly quite fond of you,” he said.

And he gave me a smile, one that was genuine.

“Well, in that case, who wants dessert?” I said with a smile of my own.
