“A nanny?”Elias said.

“Yeah,” I responded.

“We didn’t have nannies,” he said.

“No, and do you think that was a good thing?” I asked.

He shrugged. “Not exactly.”

I nodded. “Yeah. I don’t think that being raised by whoever’s wife happened to be handy was the best. But I don’t know,” I said.

“Yeah, bringing in someone new, it feels…wrong,” he said.

“Yeah,” I responded.

“But it might be a good idea. Surely, there will be some time when you and Amethyst will need some help,” he said.

“There’s you,” I responded, a smile on my face.

“When it’s time to teach him how to shoot, give me a call. Until then, I’m unavailable,” he said, laughing.

“Yeah, yeah,” I said.

I looked at him, and knew it was time to shift to less pleasant business.

“So Raphael is still here,” I said.

“Yeah. He left, but he’s back now,” Elias said.

“Any idea who he’s hooked up with?”

“Well, since we didn’t respond favorably to his offer, I’ve heard that he is working with the Roys and the Sargsyans,” he said.

“They’re going to eat him alive,” I said.

Elias shrugged.

“That’s his problem. But ours is how to manage things in the interim,” he said.

“I’ve changed all of our smuggling routes and am using entirely different businesses for transport,” I said.

“How did he take it?”

“About as well as you’d expect,” I responded.

I could still remember that conversation from several weeks ago, how Raphael had shifted from disbelief to anger, and then fell back into his cool, unbothered persona.

But I didn’t care. He was moving too fast, trying to swim in waters he didn’t know anything about. And I wasn’t going to let him bring down the Petrosyans with him.

“Such a shame,” Elias said.

“It is. But what can we do?”

“Nothing but make sure the blowback doesn’t hit us,” Elias said.
