And he was more than happy to use it.

“Take a look,” Raphael said.

He pulled out a phone, tapped the screen a couple of times, and then held it up.

Amethyst looked at me, and though I could see how much she wanted to rush to him, she waited until I gave the okay.

I nodded, and she got the phone and came back to me.

I could see the tears welling in her eyes as she shifted through the pictures.

“Cute kid, all things considered. But make sure you keep on top of her weight. I didn’t with mine, and you can see the results,” Rafael said.

I barely paid him any attention, and Amethyst paid him none at all.

Instead, she looked at the pictures of Crystal, then looked again.

She handed the phone back to Raphael, and when I looked at her face, I saw determination of a sort I had never seen before.

“So we know that you have her,” I said, not allowing my emotions to overtake me, though they definitely threatened to.

“I do. And I have things that I want,” Raphael said.

“Such as?”

“I’ll tell you in time, but first, I need Amy to come with me,” Raphael said.

“No,” I responded before even a second had passed.

But Amethyst had already started to walk toward him.

Stopped when I grabbed her hand.

“This is nonnegotiable, Mr. Petrosyan. Amy comes with me, and then we can discuss terms, including how you’re going to ensure that I live the rest of my natural life in comfort and safety.”

I didn’t say that the length of the rest of his life would be exceedingly short, but I understood the implication.

He had Crystal, and when he had Amethyst, he would effectively be able to control me, and thus the Petrosyan family.

A neat play.

One that I had no choice but to allow.

“You’ll take me to her?”

It was the first Amethyst had said since I’d spoken, and her father looked surprised before he quickly recovered.

“Of course. I wouldn’t want to keep a child from her mother.”

“Let’s go,” she said.

She stopped long enough to squeeze my hand, then walked to her father.

I didn’t bother to speak.

What could I say?

Nothing.
