She did as I asked, and when she pulled her hand away, I went back into the office. Tapped a few keys and then watched the screen.

Elias stood beside me then looked at me. “Perfect match,” he said.

“Yes, it is.”

I looked at the screen, which held dental records and fingerprints for Amethyst’s mother.

The woman’s fingerprints were a perfect match for Crystal James.

I set the computer down, then went back to the hallway.

The elevator was still open, and in fact, it looked like no one had moved an inch.

That wouldn’t surprise me.

My men were on high alert. They all knew what was at stake, knew how short my fuse was.

I stared at the woman and again saw Amethyst.

Saw that she wasn’t afraid. Even more, saw that she had been through things.

And for the first time in what felt like forever, I felt something like hope.

“It’s nice to meet you, Mrs. James. Now tell me what the fuck is going on,” I said.
