After that kind of response, I wasn’t sure if I wanted him to tell me more.

Didn’t know if I could believe him, and what did it matter?

I had Crystal, so everything else would fall into place.

He drove for another fifteen minutes and then pulled off to the side of the road again.

“Get out,” he said.

“What?” I responded.

“Out,” he said.

I wasn’t going to argue with him and knew it wouldn’t do any good anyway.

I was in the middle of God knew where with absolutely nothing, but I had Crystal. So I could handle the rest.

I got out of the car, and he rolled down the passenger side window and stuck his hand out.

I reached for the phone he offered.

“Coordinates should be in there. Make whatever calls you need to.”

“That’s it? You’re leaving?” I asked.

“Yes,” he responded.

And then he rolled up the window and drove off, not even bothering to look back.

I watched the car fade, disbelief holding me still.

This had to be some kind of trick.

But I waited a minute, another, waited so long the car wasn’t even a speck on the horizon.

No other vehicles were either.

In fact, there was nothing, no one, around anywhere, as far as I could tell.

It was afternoon now, and the day was fading fast.

I looked at the phone, then pressed the numbers I was grateful I had memorized.

Prayed someone would answer.

The phone clicked after not even half a ring.

“Who is this?” he said.

At the sound of his voice, tears started to flow. “Davit, come get us,” I said.
