“How are you?”Davit asked the next morning.

He was standing not even two feet away from me and had asked the very same question just moments ago.

I turned off the stove, took the pan off the warm burner, and turned to him. I’d wanted to make us a nice breakfast, but apparently, he wanted to talk.

“I’m fine. Perfect, as a matter of fact,” I said with a big smile.

I took one last look at the stove to make sure everything was off and then walked over to him and kissed him.

I’d done that a lot over the last hours, couldn’t get enough of touching him, really. Both because I liked it very, very much, and because I loved how safe, how treasured I felt when his arms were wrapped around me.

I broke away, put my arms on his broad shoulders. “Now, don’t ask me that again,” I said.

He laughed then wrapped his arms around my waist, bringing my body flush with this.

“No promises,” he said.

And I understood.

He hadn’t said anything, but I got it. And I wanted him to know that I got where he was coming from.

I gently cupped his face with my hands then looked into his eyes deeply, searching.

Pulled back when I was satisfied that he was open, ready to listen.

“You know you can be honest with me. You know you can tell me anything, right?”

He didn’t respond, didn’t agree or disagree, which was revealing in itself.

“Davit, you can trust me. I can handle it,” I whispered.

I’d thought a lot about that conversation with Kayla and had reached my own conclusions.

My love for Davit was unquestionable and was something that only grew and deepened with every day.

And now I knew—really knew—something else.

In her note, Carol had told me that I could rely on myself.

Told me that I was strong.

At the time, I had taken it to mean that I could only rely on myself, but I knew now that wasn’t true.

No matter what, I could rely on him.

Just like he could rely on me.

“I’m not going anywhere,” I said, my voice low.

I trusted he understood what I meant.

This wasn’t just about what had happened with Crystal.

This wasn’t about his life, about the people who had tried to hurt him before, the people who would try to hurt him again. The people who had tried to hurt me and wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.
