‘Don’t apologise. It’s all good. Just bad timing. I shouldn’t have gone there knowing the headspace you were in when we arrived.’ He’s embarrassed.

I want to tell him that yes, it’s simply a timing thing, that another day would be better. But I don’t want to kiss him another day. I don’t want him to taste me. It’s not even his age or the fact that he’s my boss. It’s because he’s not Hunter.

‘Are you going to be okay if I leave?’ he says, standing.

This is what I was afraid of. I’ve ruined things between us. ‘I really am sorry.’

He forces a smile. ‘It’s not a big deal. Just rest up.’ He hesitates. ‘You know not to mention this to anyone, right? You’re an employee—’

‘Of course. I won’t say anything.’

He nods, then leaves the apartment. The second the door clicks shut, I curl up into a ball on the sofa and do something I haven’t done in a long time.
