I smile. ‘Is that right?’
‘Absolutely.’ He releases me. ‘You should’ve called. I would’ve picked you up.’
‘I needed the walk.’
His eyes move between mine. ‘No good with your mum?’
I shake my head.
‘Let’s get out of here,’ he says, looking both ways down the corridor.
‘But I haven’t seen your dad.’
He looks back at me. ‘Not even the doctors want to see him.’
I get it. Maggie’s funeral was yesterday, and many of them attended.
‘You forget that I was raised on a diet of forgiveness.’
‘Within a religion that shuns people who make mistakes?’
‘Exactly.’
He drapes an arm around my shoulders as we head off down the corridor. ‘Stay close, and watch out for J-dubs armed with garlic.’
