Her eyebrows come together. ‘Why a lolly cake?’
‘Because every child has one at some point in their life. I’ll make the cake, and you’ll put the lollies on, picking out all the ones you don’t like.’
She watches me a moment. ‘What’s the second thing?’
I slide a hand under her pyjama top. ‘Birthday sex.’
The corners of her mouth lift. ‘Is it better than normal sex?’
‘Yes.’
‘How so?’
‘Because it’s your birthday. It’s not something I can explain. I have to show you.’
She catches my hand through her top. ‘I assume that comes after cake.’
I drop my head and drag her top up with my teeth. ‘No, Wilson. It most definitely comes before.’
Her hands go into my hair, and her eyes sink shut.
