‘Ah.’

Her smile fades. ‘Why did you get in a fight with Lee today?’

‘I think you know why.’

She exhales. ‘Since when do you care what people say about you?’

‘But it wasn’t just about me, was it?’

She searches my eyes, turning the leather band on her wrist. ‘I don’t need you getting into trouble for me.’

This conversation’s too much. ‘Okay, well, next time I’ll let the whole school think you blew me on a beach.’ I start to turn away.

‘What do you mean by “blew me on a beach”?’

I still. For the first time ever, I’m completely speechless. Surely she’s heard that phrase before.

I open my mouth to respond, but no words come. How do I explain a blow job to a J-dub who’s never even kissed a boy?

A mischievous smile spreads across Annie’s face. ‘Gotcha.’

I release a breath. ‘Jesus, Wilson.’

She skips backwards, looking very pleased with herself. ‘Hunter Reed. Lost for words.’

‘I’m still not convinced you know what it means.’

She laughs all the way to the creek.
